Superstars AimHigher with Colchester United Community Sports Trust

Superstars Aim Higher

At Colchester United Community Sports Trust superstars can AimHigher through our Learning Champions and GOAL projects.

In conjunction with Colchester AimHigher we run workshop days for gifted and talented keystage three students from six local secondary schools.

Combining physical challenges, team building activities and classroom tasks we guide the youngsters towards a wider understanding of their personal goals and how to achieve them.

Schools’ participation is organised by Debbie Bird, Colchester Schools AimHigher Co-ordinator, who can be contacted on 01206 547911.

This year’s programme has begun and will run at the EdUc@eUtd Study Support Centre at the Weston Homes Community Stadium.

The pupils who have been picked to take part will attend three GOAL (GO, Aspire, Learn) workshops over the coming weeks.

Jeanette East, Education and Study Support Manager, said “The workshops combine creative challenges, thinking skills activities and study skills tasks to guide the youngsters towards a wider understanding of their personal goals and how to achieve them.

The programme has been a real success in previous years and we are looking forward to getting to know this year’s pupils.

Often the pupils who take part in the programme are the first members of their family who have considered university as an option so we help them to look at the opportunities it can offer, and to explore how higher education can help them to achieve their goals.

We’re really looking forward to running the AimHigher workshops in the Weston Homes Community Stadium. The new EdUc@eUtd Study Support Centre has been designed to make learning fun, and the pupils who have used the centre so far have really loved it and we see them thrive.”

This year three teams will take part in the programme – the Champions who took part in AimHigher two years ago, the Blues and the Eagles.

Jeanette explained, “In their first workshop the pupils found out more about setting personal learning targets and how to achieve them. We also talked about what they aspire to do and what motivates them to keep trying.

They were then set the challenge to create a short movie on the themes of journey, aspiration, progression and motivation.

Workshop two offers some guidance on study skills, learning styles, memory challenges, study traps and exam techniques.

And for the last session the pupils work with their parents to create animation about their future choices.

The sessions are designed to give the pupils useful tips and information while encouraging them to think about what they would like to do in the future. At the same time we make the workshops fun.”

It is so important that children are given the chance to try out lots of different sports and develop competition with other schools.
