Staying on Side
The ‘Away Leg’ of Playing for Success was successfully piloted at Colbayns High School in Clacton and has subsequently rolled out to additional cohorts of youngsters for two years.
This element of the project provides an exciting opportunity for CUCST and schools to devise bespoke projects, addressing the needs of youngsters, the school and surrounding communities.
Children mix sports coaching with classroom activities for two hours a week over a six-week period.
We combine paper-based work with multi-media tasks around a range of topics, which have included anti social behaviour, healthy lifestyles and sports leadership.

Pupils rewarded for Staying on Side
A group of pupils were treated to a day at the Weston Homes Community Stadium as a reward for their hard work
as part of the Staying on Side programme.
Staying on Side is run by Colchester United Community Sports Trust. It gives CUCST and schools the opportunity to devise bespoke projects, addressing the needs of youngsters, the school and surrounding communities.
As part of the programme, a group of year 8 pupils from Colbayn’s High School in Clacton have been taking part in an 8 week project based around healthy living and well being.
Each week they took part in a variety of activities including visits from health awareness organisations such as The Junction which specialises in emotional health and well being.
As a reward for their commitment to the programme they visited the Weston Homes Community Stadium on Thursday [11 December]. While there they had the chance to try out the new 5-a-side pitches, took a tour of the stadium and used the iMacs in the EdUc@eUtd Study Support Centre to create ID Tags and a DVD movie about their visit.
Diane Bignell, Year 8 Achievement Director at Colbayn’s, said: “The change I have seen in the pupils when in and around school has been huge throughout the duration of the project. They have adopted a much more positive approach towards school and their learning.”
A group of 15 Year 5 and 6 pupils from Terling C of E primary school have also been taking part in Staying on Side, working towards a Young Sports Leaders Award (YSLA) which will help them become a team of Playground Leaders who can run safe and organised games and activities for the other pupils in their school.
They are currently 5 weeks into the 8 week project and after Christmas they will be leading an activity for a group of younger pupils as part of their final assessment.
