Thumbs Up for Community Stadium

There were huge celebrations as Colchester Borough Council  gave the go ahead by unanimous vote to finance and build the new state of the art ‘Colchester Community Stadium’.

At a full council meeting last night, 250 members of the public, as well as representatives from the Colchester United Community Sports Trust, Colchester United, the Community Stadium Action Group, Colchester United Supporters Association  witnessed a vote of approval from each and every councillor.

Darren Barrenger, Chair of the Community Sports Trust has been a key player in the last two years of consultation, discussions and business planning and was understandably overwhelmed with the decision;

“It was fantastic to hear so many of the councillors voice their approval for the Community Stadium, our passionate belief in this project and the many months of work and planning that has gone on behind the scenes will now come to fruition and benefit hundreds of thousands of children, young people and adults in Colchester.”

With the borrowing now approved there is still some work to take place before the building can commence next year, however, the decision is final and the Community Stadium will now become a reality.

The Trust, over the last two years, has also been consulting with a wide range of stakeholders to define needs and create a footprint for what is intended to be an iconic community hub for North Colchester and the adjacent area.

Darren added;

“Our experience, commitment and passion to deliver community activities and services will ensure that both the people of Colchester and the wider community will, themselves, become the beating heart of the new Colchester Community Stadium.”
