Sessions help promote positive parenting

Young mums have been given the chance to develop their positive parenting skills at a series of sessions.

The programme, designed for young parents who have recently left care, was run by the Ormiston Children’s Centre Shrub End in partnership with the Prince’s Trust at Colchester United Community Sports Trust’s Shrub End base.

Eight young women took part in the programme, along with their children who ranged in age from 6 weeks old to two and a half years.

They took part in two sessions a week for five weeks covering a wide range of topics including healthy eating, computer skills, first aid and money management. Each session also included a fun activity for the mums and children to take part in together.

Angela Hall, Children’s Centre Manager said: “The programme was a great way of helping young mums who haven’t had the best start in life themselves to develop their parenting and life skills and find out more about how to stay healthy".

“We also helped them to find out more about employment and training opportunities and gain greater knowledge of child development. The sessions were really positive and we hope that the programme as a whole will be really useful for all of the young mums who took part.”

I heard about the group at the 50+ exhibition at Charter Hall where I picked up a leaflet. It's nice to get together on a Monday morning and meet new people. My husband and I are both Colchester United supporters too. I would miss it if it had to stop as we really enjoy having a go at the activities. The keep fit has been really good and we have found out about lots of things we didn't know about like the free health walks that take place in Colchester.
