Football Plus team rise to the challenge for Sport Relief 2010
A new club for over 60s is showing its support for this year’s Sport Relief Mile, by entering a team for the event.
The Football Plus group is run by Colchester United Community Sports Trust with funding from Sport Relief and the Football Foundation through their Extra Time programme. It was launched in January to give older adults the opportunity to improve their health, increase their activity levels and boost their wellbeing while having fun. The group now meets each Monday at the Community Stadium.
As their first challenge, members of the new club have pledged to take part in the annual Sport Relief event, raising money to help to transform the lives of those in desperate need across the UK and the world’s poorest countries.
Colchester’s Sport Relief Mile takes place on Sunday 21 March at Abbey Fields, and participants can choose to do 1, 3 or 6 miles.
Angie Syrett, Football Plus organiser, said: “Our members are really excited about taking part in the event which is always great fun. It’s a fantastic way to keep fit while raising money for a brilliant cause. We hope lots of people will join our team for the event on 21 March.”
Colchester United is also lending its support to the Sport Relief Mile with players Morten Knudsen and Sam Corcoran taking time out to give a few training tips to the Football Plus team.
They also urged Colchester United fans to sign up for the Sport Relief Mile and show their true colours by wearing their Us home or away shirts with pride while taking part.
Matt Hudson, Colchester United Media Manager, said: “We would love to see all our fans doing their bit for Sport Relief by entering their local Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Mile. By taking part you will be raising cash to help people who live unimaginably tough lives every day. Enter your local Mile now at sportrelief.com.”
As well as the Mile there will also be plenty of entertainment and activities on the day, for more information and details of how to get involved visit sportrelief.com
